So I have a 3 year old who LOVES to paint. I am very happy to oblige her but her little sister always wants to join in the fun. The problem with this is, the 1 year old is always sticking everything into her mouth! I have non-toxic paint, but still. I wanted them to both be able to enjoy themselves without having to worry about my 1 year old eating everything in sight, so I decided to go looking for a recipe for edible paint.
I came across Momtastic. She has a great many things on her site, but I was drawn to her little how to video on homemade edible finger paint. http://www.momtastic.com/diy/171489-edible-homemade-finger-paint/
All you need:
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 1/3 cup flour
- 2 cups water
- dash of salt (optional)
- food coloring
- a few containers to mix in
- Put sugar, flour, water (and salt, if you like) in a small saucepan, whisk together, and reduce.
- Pour into separate containers and allow to cool.
- Mix in food coloring.
Ours turned out pretty well, but she doesn’t tell you how long to reduce your paint on the stove for. I would say at least 15 minutes! Then the fastest way to cool it down is to seperate into multiple containers (I used plastic cups), and put them in the freezer. This only took about 10 minutes.
We used neon colors for ours!
The other recommendation I would give you is to go into this expecting your kids to get messy. So maybe have them paint shirtless and have them do this somewhere that is easy to clean. My girls sat in highchairs. The clean up was fairly quick!
And expect them to want to eat it, more than paint with it! LOL
I had to sample it just to see what it tasted like. I couldn’t understand why they kept eating it! It didn’t really taste like anything. Maybe they just thought it was fun because they could eat their paint!
Let me know if you liked this activity or if there is one you think we should try!
